Our Story
On August 16, 2021, Bilal Wali, an Afghan immigrant, began the day by preparing for an internship at a resettlement agency. When he switched on the television, he was met with the shocking news of the Afghan government's collapse. Throughout his hectic day at the agency, which was humming with activity due to the sudden surge of evacuees, Bilal focused seriously on the unfolding disaster. Inspired by the day's events and his own immigration experiences, he envisioned a non-profit committed to assisting newcomers such as himself. That evening, motivated by determination he discussed the idea with like-minded people and quickly registered the organization in Maryland.
Bilal recognized the value of broad skills and formed a board of directors comprised of seasoned nonprofit veterans with up to 17 years of experience in disciplines such as development, social work, education, and women's rights, as well as talented engineers. They founded the foundation with a single initial offering—English as a Second Language classes—and have since expanded to cover a wide range of services targeted at aiding easy resettlement for immigrants.
